Diamond Fast Facts

No two diamond is exactly identical – each is unique, endowed with its own personality and characteristics. The value of a diamond is based on its rarity. To understand the value of each diamond, you first need to understand the ‘4Cs’ - Cut, Clarity, Colour and Carat. These 4 qualities are the global benchmark against which all diamonds are measured and classified in terms of rarity, grade and value. Diamonds with the highest combination of 4C ratings are rarer and more sought-after and thus commanding the highest prices.

‘Cut’ determines each diamond’s ‘fire’, sparkle and true beauty. To achieve the best possible reflection, a master diamond cutter must ensure all facets of a diamond are positioned precisely right in a geometric relationship that best reflects and disperses light entering and eventually exiting the stone. The impressive end result is a breathtaking display of the diamond’s natural brilliance and personality.

TSL’s Estrella Diamond is a stunning example of what can be achieved when a master cutter blends his skills with the latest technological innovations.

Almost all diamonds contain ‘internal inclusions’ - natural birthmarks in form of minute traces of other minerals or crystallized carbon. The fewer inclusions a stone has, the clearer, more brilliant and expensive it will be.

The number, colour, type and size of these inclusions all help to determine the clarity of a diamond and are what ultimately make each stone unique. The fewer inclusions in a diamond, the clearer and more brilliant it is.

A diamond is said to be ‘flawless’ if no inclusions can be seen under a standard 10-power jeweller’s loupe.

Diamonds are graded on a colour scale established by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). The scale ranges from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow). Colours are carefully graded under controlled lighting conditions and are compared to a master set to ensure absolute accuracy. Truly colourless, category D stones are highest on the scale and are treasured for their perfection.

Carat Weight

Carat weight is a measure of size and is the international yardstick via which diamonds are graded by gemologists the world over.

As larger diamonds of gemstone quality are rarely found, they are considered to be more valuable than other stones. That said, size alone is largely meaningless as purity, clarity and color must also be considered. As no two diamonds are exactly identical, you can rely upon the professionally trained staff at TSL to assist you in your search for the perfect stone.
